About Mass Histology

Mass Histology History

January 1, 1985: The first piece of equipment was purchased and a small histology lab is set up in the basement of 31 Huron Avenue, Worcester, MA. Histology is being performed on a part-time basis as time allowed.

April 1, 2000: As business increased, the first full-time technician is hired. Automated equipment slowly replaces work which was being done manually. A new web site is attracting new customers and the name of Mass Histology Service starts to gain a reputable name across the USA.

June 1, 2002: As the amount and size of jobs increase, MHS quickly outgrows the 300 square foot laboratory in Worcester and re-locates into a more modern 600 square foot laboratory in Warwick, Rhode Island. The number of employees grows to 1.5!

July 1, 2002: MHS contracts with a board certified veterinary pathologist and begins offering diagnostic histopathology to local veterinarians.

September 22, 23 and 24, 2004: Mass Histology Service is audited by the Federal Drug Administration. In the end, we were cited for only a few very minor deficiencies that were rectified even before the investigator left the premise. Although we can't say we are "FDA Certified" (because there is no such thing), we can say were were audited by the FDA and passed with no major citations!

October 1, 2004: Again, MHS outgrows the lab in Warwick, RI and relocates to a 1,200 square foot, custom built laboratory on Millbury Street, Worcester, MA. The new laboratory features the latest in equipment and a custom HVAC air circulating and ventilating system specially designed to keep our employees happy and healthy. It is 100% handicapped assessable and OSHA compliant. There are now 3 full-time employees.

March, 2005: MHS expands its lab to 2,400 square feet at the Millbury Street site and increases its employees to 5 full-time and 3 part-time technicians and office staff.

August 8, 2005: Now, for the first time ever and exclusively offered only by MHS, you name your price for histology service. We now have three types of services to fit just about everyone's histology budget.

November 22, 2006: We hate to see our customers spend money. To save us from this anguish, we've added a toll-free fax line. Our new fax number is (866) 554-4553.

November 1, 2007: To keep up with our growing demand in research pathology, another experienced, board certified and licensed veterinary pathologist whose specialty is toxicological pathology has been added to our list of pathologists.

January 1, 2009: MHS opens a new subsidiary lab named New England Horse Labs which services equine veterinarians.

January 21, 2010: Effective immediately, our new toll-free telephone number is (877) 944-4786, otherwise known as (877) 94-HISTO.

February 1, 2010: Mass Histology Service becomes incorporated under Chapter 180, Massachusetts General Laws.

April, 2010: Once again, MHS outgrows its 2,400 square foot facilities and re-locates into a brand new, state-of-the-art facility located at the "crossroads of central Massachusetts" (Route 146 and the Massachusetts Turnpike). The facility houses a large histology lab, a special stains lab, a GLP lab, a grossing lab, a ventilated lab and a clean room to be used exclusively for New England Horse Labs. The labs have a back-up electrical system powered by a natural gas generator, security system and a bunch of offices for staff and consulting veterinarians and veterinary pathologists. There are now 15 full-time, part-time and consulting employees all working for the company. Please click here to see some photos of our new facilities.

November, 2012: MHS opens another subsidiary lab named ParaScreen-e which, under New England Horse Labs, offers retail equine parasitic fecal testing to private horse owners.

February 12, 2013: After an all-day surprise visit from two agents from the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), Mass Histo is given a clean report card on how we handle all of our waste chemicals. We have always taken waste disposal seriously so future generations will enjoy a clean environment.

November 1, 2014: After many grueling hours of writing applications and undergoing inspections, Mass Histology Service is now a CLIA-certified lab. This prestigious certification allows Mass Histo to perform human diagnostic testing in-house.
